Penstock
Reliable and Leak-Tight Flow Control for Process Lines
Penstocks are used to control the flow of water in channels and hydraulic structures.
Depending on the installation location, they are available in channel-mounted, wall-mounted, or weir-mounted configurations. According to the preferred method of operation, Penstocks can be supplied with either manual handwheel operation or electric actuator control.
The sealing system consists of specially designed nitrile rubber seals that are resistant to wear and oil, providing bidirectional sealing performance in accordance with the AWWA C561-04 standard. All structural steel components are manufactured entirely from stainless steel, while the stem protection tube is made of polycarbonate. The frame and gate are designed to withstand the hydraulic loads of each application, allowing Penstocks to be manufactured in virtually any required size.
As standard, manually operated Penstocks are equipped with a bearing-supported stem assembly that reduces the operating force on the handwheel and ensures smooth, reliable operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Penstock achieve complete leak-tight shut-off?
The AWWA C561 standard permits a limited amount of leakage for penstocks during performance testing. However, when properly installed and maintained with undamaged seals, Penstocks can typically achieve leak-tight operation under normal operating conditions.
How is the operating load on the handwheel reduced in manual Penstocks?
Manually operated Penstocks with a handwheel are equipped with a bearing-supported stem assembly to reduce the operating load and ensure smooth operation. As a result, the gate can be opened and closed with less effort, even under high hydraulic loads. For larger gates or applications requiring higher operating forces, high-ratio gearbox operators are available.
